Session Abstract: This session aims to empower women through discussions on improving mentorship in the wind band field. By exploring research on the experiences of women band directors, attendees will learn about historical perspectives of women in instrumental music, how those perspectives impact women today, and how to improve the experiences of women band directors through mentorship. This session will provide attendees with concrete and successful methods to support current and aspiring women band directors.

Session Abstract: This session will discuss researched methods of mentorship for women to pursue a career as a band director. Through discussions on recent research about the experiences of women band directors, attendees will learn about historical perspectives of women in the band field and how to improve the representation of women band directors. By attending this session, attendees will gain concrete and successful methods to encourage young women to pursue band conducting careers.

Research Presentation, "The Inclusion of Student-Selected Repertoire in Secondary Instrumental Programs," New York State Band Directors Association Summer Conference, August 2020.
Session Abstract: This session will discuss the process and benefits of including student-selected repertoire in secondary ensemble programs. The process of selecting repertoire typically includes a variety of factors and limitations that determine the pieces a conductor can select for their ensembles. Factors that are often overlooked include the appeal of repertoire to students, as well as students’ musical preferences. The inclusion of student-selected repertoire in secondary ensemble programs can benefit students in numerous ways, including creating a sense of empowerment for students, developing students’ musical identities, establishing an understanding of characteristics of quality repertoire, demystifying the repertoire selection process, and placing the responsibility of learning on the students. Session attendees will learn about the psychology behind the inclusion of student choices within ensemble programming, as well as successful processes to include student selected repertoire within their ensemble programs.
